Realizing that they can have an impact on the world is one of the many lessons students in grade 8 learn when they, as part of an integrated language arts and social studies unit, dedicate themselves to collecting donations for the Anh Linh Love School. At first glance, it may look like an ordinary food drive, as the students load boxes into the trucks that will transport them to the school, just a short ride away from SSIS. But when our middle school students deliver food and supplies donated by the local business community, it is the culmination of a long unit of study in business practices, fundraising, and professional communications. The project allows students in Grade 8 to apply those skills as they request donations and coordinate deliveries. They learn about the socio-economic diversity within our neighborhood and how to apply persuasive language as they ask business owners for contributions. Throughout the years, the bond with Anh Linh has only grown stronger and our students have discovered the authentic gratification of having a direct impact in their own community.
