SuperUnit Launch: Representatives from the Wilderness Foundation Africa will share about the rhino poaching crisis Field Trip: Grade 5 students will be going to Cat Tien National Park for three days and two nights to learn how communities can help sustain and strengthen this ecosystem. Guest Speakers: Representatives from Wilderness Foundation Africa and the EAST Primate Recovery Center at Cat Tien National Park Project: Students will work to research, design, and build a biome to determine how choices impact the balance of a mini ecosystem; they will work on creating food puzzles for the gibbon population at Cat Tien National Park Core Values Key Concepts: Academic Excellence, Dedicated Service SuperUnit Celebration: Student work and reflections will be integrated into Learning Journeys at the end of the quarter. Science: Students will discover the importance of balance and energy within ecosystems. Many activities will take place at Cat Tien National Park. Students will also look at how humans can positively and negatively impact ecosystems. Math: Students will learn about fractions, decimals, and the order of operations. They will learn about the relationships among decimals and fractions, which will help them interpret statistics related to their understanding in the unit. Social Studies: Students will learn about human impacts on natural ecosystems. They will learn about the relationship between global trade and the local economy. Students will also be learning about how humans use different types of areas for different activities. English: Students will be participating in book clubs, and determining the theme of the stories they read using details from the texts. They will be learning about figurative language and applying what they’ve learned to their narrative writing. Art: Capstone: Students will create artwork from their own chosen theme in preparation for their Capstone Exhibition at the end of the year. Drama: Script writing helps students develop a stronger understanding of complex story structures. Music: Students will use elements of nature as a source of inspiration for music composition. PE: Connecting to our Super Unit by inventing and creating our own games while targeting PE benchmarks. Vietnamese: Vietnamese culture identifies in many ways with nature.
